Quality Dentures And Partial Dentures

Even if you are missing teeth, you too can have a long-lasting smile! At the office of Candace L. Peterson, DMD, we believe that every person should feel good when they smile, so we provide a variety of cosmetic and restorative dental solutions to fit the needs and wants of our patients.

Dentures are one of the options patients have for missing teeth. A denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and their surrounding tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and even enhance your smile!

Our restorative dental practice offers two types of dentures: partial and complete dentures. Dr. Peterson provides partial dentures to patients who still have some natural teeth left. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting; however, if a patient no longer has any teeth left, then complete dentures will be used. A complete denture will either be conventional or immediate

A conventional denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, which usually takes between four to six weeks. During this time the patient will go without teeth.

Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made. Dr. Peterson may recommend implant-supported dentures in some cases for additional stability.

Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years; however, because of normal wear, they may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted at our Tualatin dental office.

Why Dental Patients Choose Dentures

There are many reasons why a patient may need dentures. Many patients who visit Dr. Peterson receive denture treatment mainly for the following reasons:

  • Loss of all teeth in an arch which calls for Complete Denture care
  • Loss of several teeth in an arch which calls for Partial Denture care
  • Enhancing smile and facial tissues.
  • Improving chewing, speech, and digestion.

What Does Getting Dentures Involve?

The process of getting dentures requires several appointments with Dr. Peterson, which usually takes several weeks. Highly accurate impressions, or molds, and measurements are taken by Dr. Peterson and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments at our office may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit.  At your final appointment, Dr. Peterson will precisely adjust and place the completed denture to ensure a natural and comfortable fit.

Please note that it is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty; however, this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.

Dr. Peterson will give you care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits at our Tualatin office will aid in maximizing the lifespan of your new dentures.
