Brushing Your Teeth
It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and most especially before going to bed at night. To properly brush your teeth use a soft bristle toothbrush with toothpaste and follow the few steps below:
1. Place the brush on your teeth at a 45-degree angle from your gums and gently brush in a small circular motion.
2. Brush the outer, inner and biting surfaces of all your teeth.
3. Clean the inside of your front teeth with the tip of the brush.
4. Lastly, remove bacteria from your tongue by brushing it to freshen your breath.
Electric toothbrushes can be used as well. Our hygienists recommend that you place the bristles of the electric brush on your gums and teeth and let it clean a few teeth at a time until you’ve cleaned them all.
Flossing Your Teeth
The best way to clean between your teeth and gums is through flossing. Flossing and brushing your teeth work synergistically to help enhance and maintain excellent oral health. On top of brushing your teeth regularly, it is important to floss daily. Benefits of flossing include:
· Gets rid of plaque
· Helps avoid gum disease
· Prevents gum, teeth and bone damage
To floss, take 12-16 inches of dental floss and wrap it around your middle fingers with about 2 inched of floss between your hands. Gently guide the string with your forefingers and thumbs between your teeth. Move the floss in a “C” motion, underneath your gum line and gently move the floss up and down to clean each side of your teeth. Repeat this for each tooth. Floss holders can be of great help if you have difficulty doing this.
Rinsing Out Your Mouth
It is important to rinse with water after brushing to eliminate any excess bacteria that may still be lingering in your mouth. If you are unable to brush your teeth after a meal, rinsing out your mouth with water is a sufficient alternative. Using mouthwash is a great alternative to water, just make sure to consult with us to make sure the mouthwash you are using is the best kind to use.
Other tools you can use to enhance your oral health care at home include:
· Interdental brushes
· Rubber tip stimulators
· Tongue cleaners
· Irrigation devices
· Medicated rinses
