Dental Crowns (Caps) in Tualatin, OR

At Candace L. Peterson, DMD we are proud to offer our patients in the Tualatin, Tigard & surrounding Southwest Portland areas with porcelain crowns. Porcelain crowns have become increasingly popular in recent years because they mimic the natural color of the tooth, so they look and feel like normal teeth and are hardly noticeable. These white crowns are made to match the shape, size and color of your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting and beautiful smile!

What is a Dental Crown?

A crown (or cap) is a cover that completely covers the surface of the tooth. When a tooth is crowned, it is restored to its original shape and size. Crowns protect and strengthen tooth structures that cannot be otherwise restored with procedures such as fillings.

When is a Dental Crown Needed?

A dental crown may need to be put in place for numerous reasons, but the most common instances include:

·       Broken, cracked or fractured tooth

·       Cosmetic dental enhancement

·       Decayed tooth

·       Fractured and/or large fillings

·       Tooth with a prior root canal

The Dental Crown Procedure

The dental crown procedure usually requires to trips to our Tualatin office. During the first visit, Dr. Peterson will make highly detailed impressions of your teeth that will be used to create a crown tailor-made for your mouth. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown, which will be used for about two weeks until your new, permanent crown is created.

After your tooth is sufficiently numb, Dr. Peterson will remove any decay from the tooth and shape the surface so it perfectly accommodates the new crown. Next, your temporary crown will be inserted with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to make sure that everything is aligned properly.

Your secondary appointment will involve removing the temporary crown and having your tooth re-cleaned. Finally, your new permanent crown will be installed and secured to ensure optimal biting and spacing. The new crown may feel somewhat foreign in your mouth at first, but you won’t even notice the new crown after a few days.

Once your crown is properly in place, we will provide detailed instructions for care and maintenance. Regularly scheduled visits to your dentist are recommended to ensure that everything is working properly.
