Are dental x-rays safe?

Dental x-rays expose a patient to very low levels of radiation. In our everyday lives we are all exposed to natural radiation, and the amount of radiation a patient is exposed to from a complete set of x-rays is actually less than what a person receives in one day from natural sources. high speed digital imaging

The low level that dental x-rays produce are considered safe and Dr. Peterson and her staff take every precautions to limit our patient’s exposure to radiation when taking dental x-rays. From using a lead apron to protect the patient’s body to the latest x-ray technology that uses high speed digital imaging to minimize exposure time, our patient’s safety always comes first.

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

How often you have dental x-rays depends on medical history, dental history and your current condition. Dr. Peterson determines each patient’s care plan based on the review of your history, dental exam, signs and symptoms, age consideration, and risk for disease.

If you are a new patient, a full mouth series of dental x-rays is recommended to establish a baseline record for comparison of future changes. Depending upon Dr. Peterson’s recommendation, we will take bitewing x-rays once or twice a year at your six month checkup to detect any new dental problems.
